Until recently, architects, engineers, and construc- tion professionals have concerned themselves with making buildings safe, structurally sound, functionally appropriate, and, of course, aesthetically pleasing. In
the past few years, as energy costs have risen and concerns
about the environmental impact of greenhouse gases have
grown, those same professionals and others have realized
that they also need to make buildings more resource
efficient and environmentally friendly.
Known as green building, green architecture, or
sustainable design, this worldwide movement is changing
the way the buildings in which we live, work, and play are
